Inconel® 718

UNS N07718 Precipitation-Hardenable Nickel-Chromium Superalloy

Inconel® 718 (UNS N07718) is a precipitation-hardenable nickel-chromium superalloy designed for exceptional strength and creep resistance at elevated temperatures while retaining excellent corrosion resistance. It is one of the most widely used superalloys in aerospace, gas turbine, and high-performance industrial applications, accounting for roughly half of all nickel-base superalloy tonnage produced worldwide.

The alloy is age-hardened to develop very high yield, tensile, and creep-rupture strength at temperatures up to 1300°F (704°C). Inconel 718 has a sluggish age-hardening response, which gives it excellent fabrication characteristics and dimensional stability during processing.

Inconel 718 offers a unique combination of strength, fatigue resistance, fabrication characteristics, and consistency, making it a workhorse alloy for jet engines, gas turbines, oil and gas downhole tools, and cryogenic service.

  • Cryogenic & High-Pressure Service
  • Space & Defense

When to Specify Inconel 718

  • Inconel 718 vs. 625 — 718 is precipitation-hardened with much higher strength (yield ~150 ksi vs. ~60 ksi). Use 718 for structural and rotating parts; use 625 for corrosion service or anywhere age-hardening isn’t desired.
  • Inconel 718 vs. Waspaloy — Waspaloy has higher temperature capability (~1400°F+) but lower strength below 1200°F and is more difficult to fabricate. 718 is preferred for fabricated structures.
  • Inconel 718 vs. 17-4 PH stainless — 718 has dramatically better elevated-temperature strength and corrosion resistance. 17-4 PH is preferred when budget matters and service is below ~600°F.
  • Inconel 718 vs. A286 — A286 is iron-based, lower cost, and useful to ~1200°F. 718 has higher strength and a better service ceiling for rotating engine parts.
