C70600 90/10 Copper-Nickel

UNS C70600 Cupronickel

C70600 is a 90/10 copper-nickel alloy (90% Cu, 10% Ni) recognized as the global standard for marine seawater service. Small additions of iron and manganese provide enhanced corrosion resistance and erosion resistance under flowing seawater conditions, while the alloy’s natural copper content provides strong resistance to biofouling and microbiologically induced corrosion (MIC).

C70600 is the dominant choice for seawater piping, condenser tubing, and offshore platform service. It performs reliably across a broad temperature and flow range and is well established in naval, commercial marine, and power generation applications.

The alloy offers excellent fabrication characteristics and long service life, and is widely supported by mature specifications and supply chains worldwide.

When to Specify C70600

  • C70600 vs. C71500 (70/30 Cu-Ni) — 70/30 has higher strength and slightly better high-velocity seawater performance. 90/10 is more economical and is the global default for general marine service.
  • C70600 vs. 316L stainless — 90/10 Cu-Ni dramatically outperforms 316L in seawater service due to MIC resistance and lower biofouling. 316L is preferred for cleaner, lower-chloride water.
  • C70600 vs. titanium — Titanium is the gold standard for severe seawater but at significantly higher cost. 90/10 Cu-Ni is preferred for general service where titanium is overkill.
  • C70600 vs. duplex stainless — Duplex has higher strength but significantly worse biofouling and MIC performance in seawater. 90/10 is generally preferred for unfiltered seawater service.
