AISI 301 / UNS S30100 (Austenitic) Stainless Steel
Chemistry, mechanical properties, physical properties, and practical selection notes for rolled AISI 301 products.
Performance & Use Notes
- High work-hardening austenitic stainless: strength increases via cold work (tempered/cold-rolled), not heat treatment.
- Corrosion resistant in many environments, but generally lower corrosion resistance than 304/304L.
- Welding note: susceptible to carbide precipitation in some welded applications; 304L is commonly chosen for welded parts due to lower carbon.
Standards & Designations
ASTM A240 ♦ ASTM A666 ♦ UNS S30100
Data Tables
- High work-hardening austenitic grade used for springs/tempered strip; good corrosion resistance and formability.

301 stainless steel from Source21 is a high performance austenitic stainless steel engineered for applications that demand exceptional strength flexibility and fatigue resistance. Renowned for its rapid work hardening characteristics Type 301 stainless steel is a preferred choice for components that must flex repeatedly while maintaining structural integrity. It delivers outstanding spring performance is available in a wide range of tempers from annealed through extra full hard and polishes to a smooth bright or mirror like finish while remaining easy to form in the annealed condition. Commonly used in springs clips seat brackets couplings shims fasteners aerospace bellows and flexible ducting this grade supports both precision and durability across demanding industries.
Source21 supplies 301 stainless steel in coil, strip, sheet, foil, and bar with finishes including 2B, BA, and bright polished spring finish, all produced to meet ASTM A240, ASTM A666, and AMS 5517 through 5520 standards.
