Nickel 200 (UNS N02200) / Nickel 201 (UNS N02201)

Commercially Pure Wrought Nickel

What Are Nickel 200 & Nickel 201?

Nickel 200 (UNS N02200) and Nickel 201 (UNS N02201) are commercially pure wrought nickel grades valued for excellent corrosion resistance — particularly in caustic alkalis — along with strong electrical and thermal conductivity, low gas content, and low base hardness. Both grades are 99% nickel minimum, with the difference being maximum carbon content.

Nickel 201 is the low-carbon version of Nickel 200 (0.02% C max vs. 0.15% C max) and is the preferred grade for service above approximately 600°F (315°C), where the higher carbon content of Nickel 200 can lead to graphite precipitation and embrittlement. Below this temperature, the two grades are essentially interchangeable, and most material is supplied dual-certified to both grades.

Both grades are widely used in caustic soda production (chlor-alkali), electronic and electrical components, and high-purity chemical processing where contamination must be minimized.

When to Specify Nickel 200 vs. Nickel 201

  • Service below 600°F — Either grade works. Most material is supplied dual-certified.
  • Service above 600°F — Specify Nickel 201 to avoid graphite precipitation and embrittlement.
  • Severe forming or spinning — Nickel 201 has lower base hardness and a slower work-hardening rate, making it better for severe cold work.
  • Vs. Monel 400 — Pure nickel has better caustic performance but lower strength. Monel 400 is preferred for HF and seawater service.
  • Vs. Inconel 600 — Inconel 600 has chromium for better high-temperature oxidation, but pure nickel is better for caustic service.
